Tohono O'odham Skilled Nursing Facility Renovation

Project Description

Strategic renovations opes up an inward focused, hospital-like senior nursing facility to provide views and access to the desert landscape.

This project is part of an overall master plan that LRD completed for the Archie Hendricks, Sr. Skilled Nursing Facility. The master plan consists of renovations to the main building, small home assisted living and staff housing. Shared public areas are expanded to include an activity kitchen, hearth area, media/multi-purpose area and a lounge for the dining area. The design upgrades finishes in the dining room and server line, and removes storefront glass separating the two spaces to provide better visual connections.

The Tohono O’odham spend the majority of their lives outside, so it is crucial to create a sense of connection to the desert while protecting frail residents from the elements. The plan adds a clerestory to increase natural light levels in the space, and morning and afternoon porches on the east and west sides to facilitate a greater connection with the nearby desert environment. The main activity room is enlarged to accommodate larger groups and provide greater flexibility. A folding retractable wall allows staff to enclose smaller areas to suit the needs of individual activities.
